KU Engineering selects associate dean for research

LAWRENCE — Candan Tamerler, Wesley G. Cramer Professor in Mechanical Engineering, has been named as the associate dean for research (ADR) for the University of Kansas School of Engineering. The ADR’s primary responsibility is to promote the highest levels of research excellence by developing and implementing programs and initiatives to raise the school’s research profile, increase the school’s research funding levels and enhance the school’s scholarly productivity.

“Professor Tamerler’s research experiences span the interfaces of engineering, physical sciences and life sciences. She has a strong research and scholarly portfolio and has built numerous interdisciplinary teams,” said Dean of Engineering Arvin Agah. “I am eager to work with her to raise the school’s research profile and elevate the stature of KU Engineering at the national level.”

Tamerler also serves associate director in the Bioengineering Program and director of Bio-mediated and Biomimetic Materials at the Institute for Bioengineering Research. Prior to KU, Tamerler served as an assistant director of the Genetically Engineered Materials Science & Engineering Center (GEMSEC), a National Science Foundation MRSEC, at the University of Washington. She was one of the core faculty members who established GEMSEC in 2005. Between 2002-2010 while concurrently holding an affiliated professor position in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Washington, she also was a tenured professor and chair of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Department at Istanbul Technical University.

Combining the molecular biology to materials science, Tamerler researches biology-enabled nanotechnologies and the engineering of biomolecular systems for design, synthesis and biofabrication of materials in a wide range of applications.
