Merienda Speaker Series will spark discussion on transcultural cinema


LAWRENCE—The University of Kansas Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies will host faculty speakers for the Spring 2018 Merienda Speaker Series, which showcases KU presenters who work and research in the Latina/o communities.

The series will feature professors from the School of Education and the departments of Film & Media Studies and Spanish & Portuguese:

"Migration, Memory and Moving Beyond the Image; Sound and Editing in Transcultural Cinema"

Margaret Jamieson, assistant professor of film & media studies

"From Spain to Latin America: Regional Varieties of Spanish and Their Perceived Social Values"

Manuela Gonzalez-Bueno, associate professor of curriculum & teaching

11 a.m. April 10

"Are Brazilians Latinos? How has Literature Answered this Question?"

Luciano Tosta, associate professor of Brazilian literature & culture

10 a.m. April 25

The Merienda Speaker Series allows attendees to engage in discussions with expert scholars and learn about emerging research in Latin American & Caribbean Studies in an informal setting. This year, the presentations are interactive to emphasize conversation and activities between the speaker and audience members.

All of the Meriendas will be held in 318 Bailey Hall, with free food and refreshments provided.
