Spotlight on Care returns in virtual format for spring 2022

LAWRENCE – The Spotlight on Care series at the University of Kansas resumes Jan. 27, with sessions planned at noon Thursdays on a biweekly basis. As is signature for the series, each session will engage perspectives and practices of colleagues near and far who incorporate or center care and well-being in their research and practice.

The first session of the semester will be an opportunity to check in with colleagues and friends and offer suggestions for topics to be covered during the semester.

“We want this series to be beneficial for those who attend, and we find that discussion together has illuminated familiar topics in new ways,” says Emily Ryan, director of The Commons. “This series really is both for and of the community it generates.”

The relationships that emerge from this series are an important part of creating a community around care.

“Spotlight on Care events aim to bring students, faculty and staff from across the university together around questions related to care,” said Carolyn Caine, research development and administrative specialist at the Institute for Policy & Social Research. “It’s valuable to learn from each other’s perspectives and practices and connect with people we might not typically meet in the regular course of our work at KU.”

A collaborative effort, this series is grounded in connecting people, ideas and practices.

“Spotlight on Care welcomes returning and first-time participants to sessions that explore a range of approaches to devote time and intention to care for ourselves, both in community and individuals,” said Celka Straughn, deputy director for public practice, curatorial and research, Andrew W. Mellon Director of Academic Programs at the Spencer Museum of Art.

Spotlight on Care is co-hosted by The Commons, the IPSR Center for Compassionate & Sustainable Communities, the Spencer Museum of Art and the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity, with support from the Environmental Studies Program, the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Faculty Development & Mentoring.

Register for the first session.
