Mon, 03/11/2013 — LAWRENCE – It is one of the most popular consumer electronics gadgets in U.S. history, and now with the help of the Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE) at the University of Kansas, the iPad may one day change the way students take standardized tests.
This winter 1,423 students in fourth and seventh grades used the iPad to take their formative assessments in English Language Arts and mathematics, which marks the first time CETE delivered a test on the iPad. School participation was voluntary, and 15 schools across Kansas participated during the eight-week testing window.

Thu, 03/07/2013 — LAWRENCE – An international organization dedicated to furthering the development of applied mathematics and computational science has recognized a professor of mathematics at the University of Kansas for his contributions.
Tyrone Duncan, a professor at KU since 1974, is the recipient of the 2013 W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The award honors individuals for their research or contributions to differential equations and control theory. Duncan will give the Reid Prize Lecture this July at the SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego.

LAWRENCE – The University of Kansas recognized some of its most productive researchers recently, conferring the Leading Light Award on 40 faculty and staff at the Lawrence campus.
The 40 are principal investigators or co-principal investigators on externally funded grants of $1 million or more awarded during the 2012 fiscal year. Recipients were recognized at a luncheon, where each received an inscribed bronze sunflower symbolic of Kansas and their leadership in research.

The latest cause for celebration is today’s announcement of new Dean of Engineering Michael Branicky.
Branicky currently serves as professor and chair in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland. He will join the School of Engineering as dean on July 1.
