School of Education offers free professional development for educators in Kansas City

OVERLAND PARK — The School of Education at the University of Kansas has announced dates for the 2017-2018 Strategies Event Series, which will include three interactive professional development lectures at the Edwards Campus. 

The first session of the series, “Mindset Makes the Difference Part II,” will feature Reva Friedman, associate professor in the Department of Curriculum & Teaching; and Cindy Swartz, technology integration coordinator for USD 232 De Soto. The presentation will build and expand participant knowledge of mindset and have participants practice specific strategies to promote the development of healthy, functional mindsets. 

Friedman and Swartz’s session will take place at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 in 120 BEST Building. The session is free and open to the public, though an RSVP is required.

The second session of the series will take place at 9 a.m. Feb. 24, 2018. Karen Jorgensen, lecturer in the curriculum & teaching department, will present an interactional session for classroom teachers. The presentation title and description will be announced later this year.

The third and final session of the 2017-2017 series will take place April 28, 2018. Joseph Novak, lecturer, and Deborah Perbeck, a program coordinator from the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, will present a session designed for building and district level leaders in PK-12 settings. The presentation title and description will be announced in the near future.

“Our Strategies Conference is an invigorating event hosted at KU each summer,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “Many of our participants make the trip to Lawrence for our summer conference, so we wanted the Strategies Event Series to complement the support we provide to reach our educators and service providers throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area as well.”
