KU Edwards Campus partnering with KC metro employers, community colleges, high schools for outreach events

OVERLAND PARK – The University of Kansas Edwards Campus will host two events the week of Nov. 11, bringing together students, employers and community members to provide career and education pathways related to workforce-ready careers. Both events provide unique hands-on, practical experience and networking opportunities for students looking to further their academic and professional careers.

Wednesday, Nov. 13, the KU Edwards Campus will host CareerUP, an annual event providing networking and professional development connecting students with area employers. The event focuses on building essential skills and making connections that lead to real professional opportunities. This year’s event already includes more than 50 employers and nearly 200 student registrants.

Available for interview: Lesley Elwell, KU Edwards Campus alumna and chief people officer for JE Dunn; Leigh Anne Taylor Knight, executive director and chief operating officer for the DeBruce Foundation and featured CareerUP presenter, and Robert Cowan, director of the National Benefits Center, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

CareerUP will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the BEST Building Conference Center at the KU Edwards Campus.

Friday, Nov. 15, more than 350 Kansas City-area high school students will participate in the Edwards Campus’ annual Biotech Day outreach event. This event is designed to bridge science education from high school to a four-year degree and a successful career in science, as well as promote student interest and access to the field of biotechnology. Students take part in hands-on learning experiences, including a flash science fair, and they have the opportunity to connect with KUEC biotechnology seniors, who use the event to recruit apprentices for their capstone research projects.

Available for interview: Randall Logan, professor of practice and biotechnology program director, and Jack Treml, biotechnology professor of practice; flash science fair judges Sonia Hall, C.E.O. of BioKansas; Jan Kessinger, Kansas state representative and board member for the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle; and Jeff Radel, associate dean for academic & student affairs at the KU Medical Center.

Biotech Day will take place from 9:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the BEST Building Conference Center at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. Doors will open at 8:45 a.m.
