KU will hold summit on community-engaged learning and scholarship

LAWRENCE — The KU Center for Service Learning will host the Summit on Community-Engaged Learning and Scholarship on Jan. 27. The goal of this summit is to engage, connect and support University of Kansas faculty, staff and administrators with interest in:

  • Addressing community-identified issues through service learning, community-engaged scholarship or civic engagement
  • Examining the commitment of the public university in contributing to addressing societal issues through campus and community partnerships.

Kathleen Fitzpatrick, director of digital humanities and professor of English at Michigan State University will deliver the keynote address, “Generous Thinking and the Public University in 2021,” at 9:30 a.m. Fitzpatrick will discuss her book “Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University,” which urges academics to think critically, constructively and generously. This mode of engagement is described as listening over speaking, community over individualism and collaboration over competition. This keynote is sponsored by The Commons and the KU Libraries.

The summit also will feature presentations from KU faculty, staff and local community partners on these topics:

  • “Do Good” Projects: Creating Change through Community and Academic Collaborations
  • The Anatomy of Multisector Community-Campus Collaboratives for Change and Improvement to Address Disparities
  • Telling the Story of Community Engagement- How, When, Why?
  • Promoting Civic Engagement and Advocacy through Campus Partnerships

Through community and campus partnerships, the Center for Service Learning advances service-learning, community-engaged scholarship, and civic engagement that fosters a commitment to participation for a diverse, just, and global society.
