LAWRENCE — The University Career Center at the University of Kansas has announced the 2019-2020 Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY). This year’s award winner is Abigal Percich, a junior in civil engineering from Lawrence, who works as an undergraduate researcher in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering.

The SEOTY award recognizes student employees who embody service excellence, dedication and whose academic achievements remain stellar. Percich will receive an engraved plaque and a $500 award. She will be entered into the National Student Employee of the Year competition.

“Many students ‘go with the flow’ and perform general tasks I assign, but few students take the initiative to target certain activities and push beyond the general knowledge of an activity in search of a deeper understanding. Abigal is one such student,” said Percich’s supervisor, Admin Husic, assistant professor in the School of Engineering.

Forty-five students were nominated for this year’s award. A team of volunteer reviewers selected five finalists, including the winner. In addition to Percich, the finalists included:

  • Tyler Ross, Center for STEM Learning
  • Amy Du, School of Business
  • Manuel Castro, TRIO Supportive Educational Services
  • Grace Woods, Student Housing

“This position has really impacted what exactly I want to do after college. I’ve gained a more profound appreciation for the research process and the work that goes into collecting and analyzing data,” Percich said.

In lieu of hosting an in-person ceremony this year, the University Career Center produced a video recognizing all the nominees and highlighting the finalists. Head to the Career Center website to view the video and learn more about the Student Employee of the Year Program.
