School of Education to host inaugural Lelon Capps Lecture Series Presentation


LAWRENCE — The Department of Curriculum & Teaching at the University of Kansas will welcome Jennifer Bay-Williams, author and featured presenter for the inaugural Lelon Capps Lecture Series event.

The presentation, “How to Give Students a Strategic Advantage… In Math Class and Beyond,” will be given by Bay-Williams at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Forum D of the Burge Union. A casual reception will immediately follow the presentation, which is free and open to the public.

Bay-Williams currently serves as a professor at the University of Louisville in Kentucky where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education and works in local schools to support effective mathematics teaching and learning. Before becoming a teacher educator, Bay-Williams taught K-12 mathematics in Missouri and in Perú.

Bay-Willams’ national leadership includes serving as a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Board of Directors, as secretary and president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), and as a lead writer on the AMTE Standards for Preparing Teachers of Mathematics. She is currently a member of the TODOS: Mathematics for All Board of Directors. 

Guests may park in either the Allen Fieldhouse Parking Garage or the Central District Parking Garage for a fee of $1.75 an hour, and they must pre-pay at the pay station located in the garages. Guests may also park for free after 5 p.m. in Lot 54, located to the east of Green Hall across the street from the Burge Union.

The Lelon Capps Lecture Series is supported by a fund established through KU Endowment and is hosted by the Department of Curriculum & Teaching, with support from the School of Education and Department of Mathematics. The purpose of the Lelon Capps Lecture Series Fund, honoring Professor Capps (retired), is to bring nationally recognized speakers in education to KU. More information about the lecture series can be found here.
