LAWRENCE — The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Kansas has named a new leader to oversee key issues in faculty and staff hiring, retention, development, policies and procedures.

Ben Eggleston, professor of philosophy, will begin the new role July 1. He will succeed Jim Mielke, who has served as an associate dean in the College since 2010. Mielke will continue to serve the College as an adviser through the next academic year.

“I am so pleased to hire Ben to join our leadership team. His background of university service and leadership provides him a broad range of experiences and networks that will prove invaluable in this role. I look forward to working with him on continuing progress in faculty and staff affairs,” said Clarence Lang, interim dean of the College.

Eggleston is a full professor who joined the faculty in the Department of Philosophy in 2002. He served as department chair from 2009-12, as director of graduate studies from 2007-09 and 2017-18, and as director of undergraduate studies from 2004-07. He also served as president of the University Senate from 2010-11, in addition to several other campus task forces and committees.

“In my time at KU, I've been repeatedly impressed with the commitment of faculty to excellence in teaching, research and service, and I hold the faculty across the College in particularly high esteem,” Eggleston said. “I am eager to support the work of my colleagues by managing personnel matters with empathy, fairness and efficiency. I also look forward to contributing to the development of policies and procedures that promote all of our goals in the College with integrity and transparency.”

As associate dean for administrative affairs, Eggleston will lead faculty and staff searches, hires, retentions and sabbaticals. He will also work closely with the College’s leadership team to review and update College policies and procedures and will assist the dean in promotions, tenure decisions, third-year reviews, post-tenure reviews and leadership development.

Eggleston has been honored with awards in recognition of his teaching and service, including KU’s Don & Pat Morrison Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching, Keeler Family Intra-University Professorship and Office for Diversity in Science Training Service Award. He has served several years in various roles for University and Faculty senates, on the College’s Committee on Appointments, Promotion & Tenure, and university-wide committees, including the PRO steering committee and the Task Force on the Assessment of Teaching & Learning.

Eggleston is an active scholar. His research focuses on contemporary ethical theory, the ethics of climate change and the moral philosophy of John Stuart Mill. He is the author of more than 20 scholarly articles and book chapters, and the co-editor of two books. He and a colleague have recently begun a multiyear project of commissioning and editing a series of 30 books on ethics for Cambridge University Press.

The College is the heart of KU, educating the most students, producing the most research and collaborating with nearly every entity at KU. The College is home to more than 50 departments, programs and centers, as well as the School of the Arts, School of Literatures, Languages & Cultures and School of Public Affairs & Administration.
