Brittney Cooper will open Hall Center's Humanities Lecture Series

LAWRENCE — Brittney Cooper, best-selling author of "Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower," will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Liberty Hall. This event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. A book signing will take place after the lecture.

In recent years, Cooper has risen to become one of the most prominent black feminist leaders of her generation. Also known as “Professor Crunk,” she is the co-founder of the infamous Crunk Feminist Collective blog. Cooper has navigated both the worlds of academia and national media. As an associate professor of women's & gender studies and Africana studies at Rutgers University and a regular TV commentator, she has appeared on "The Melissa Perry Harris Show," "All In with Chris Hayes" and "Al Jazeera America." Her work and words have been featured in nearly a dozen publications, including The New York Times and New York Magazine.

In both 2013 and 2014, Cooper was named to The Root 100, an annual list of top black influencers. Her first book, "Beyond Respectability: The Intellectual Thought of Race Women," looks at black women’s thought leadership in the U.S. and makes a call to reinvigorate contemporary scholarly and popular conversations about black feminism. Cooper believes black feminism can change the world for the better. Her scholarly research interrogates the manner in which public black women have theorized racial identity and gender politics and the methods they used to operationalize those theories for the uplift of black communities. Along with work on black female public intellectuals, Cooper studies black women's organizations as sites for the production of intellectual thought as well as contemporary articulations of black womanhood.

Founded in 1947, the Humanities Lecture Series is the oldest continuing series at KU. More than 185 eminent scholars from around the world have participated in the program, including two-time National Book Award-winner Jesmyn Ward, poet Gwendolyn Brooks, and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. Recent speakers have included Neil Gaiman, Siddhartha Mukherjee, and Zadie Smith. Shortly after the program’s inception, a lecture by one outstanding KU faculty member was added to the schedule.
