Tulane University administrator to present as CIO candidate


LAWRENCE — Mary Walsh, assistant vice president for academic & administrative systems at Tulane University, will make a public presentation Thursday as a candidate for the chief information officer at the University of Kansas.

Walsh is the second of three candidates for the position who will make public presentations during their respective campus visits. Walsh’s talk will be at 10 a.m. April 5 in Alderson Room of the Kansas Union.

Walsh is currently the assistant vice president for academic and administrative computing at Tulane. Her responsibilities include the strategic direction and leadership for the planning, budgeting, implementation and ongoing support for academic and administrative technology. In addition, she is responsible for aligning technology resources to develop and support the tools and platforms for high-activity research needs, innovative pedagogy and enhancing student success.

She is a longtime employee at Tulane, and her experience there includes major improvements in technology to support the university’s academic and research missions, along with unexpected experiences such as Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent recovery effort. She now includes disaster recovery and business continuity as part of her portfolio.

Walsh is committed to providing support and encouragement to all exploring the STEM fields. She is a mentor and coach for the Posse Foundation, a college access and youth leadership development program. Walsh is involved in service at both the national and state level. She is a member of EDUCAUSE and currently chair of its recognition committee. In addition, Walsh is a member of the Louisiana Digital Government Summit Advisory Board. Walsh is in the final stages of completing her doctorate in linguistics and anthropology. Her dissertation is focused on language, women and STEM. She earned a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Tulane and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Montclair State University.

Carl Lejuez, search committee chair and dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, invites KU faculty, staff and students to take part in the public presentation for each CIO candidate and then provide feedback.

The university releases information about each candidate roughly 24 hours before their respective presentation. The final candidate is scheduled to appear:

  • Candidate 3 presentation: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Monday, April 9, Bruckmiller Room, Adams Alumni Center.

The CIO provides vision, leadership, oversight and management of the university’s information technology services, infrastructure, hardware and software. The CIO ensures the university leverages technology to promote excellence in innovation, research and academics. The CIO provides management oversight of KU IT resources and leads the development, implementation and ongoing updates of the campus IT strategic plan. This effort focuses on the delivery of effective, efficient and secure IT services to the entire campus community. The CIO leads more than 275 universitywide IT professionals in the areas of strategic planning, research and technology services support, enterprise resource planning, business process management, information security, web services and business continuity planning and emergency preparedness. The CIO works collaboratively with KU leadership, faculty, staff and students across the university and represents KU IT activities to various external national organizations as well as divisions of state government.

Information about each candidate and the opportunity to provide feedback will be available on the CIO search website. The presentations will be recorded and available for viewing after the final candidate has presented. Feedback on the candidates will be due April 12.
