Scholar on pentecostal Christianity to speak at religious studies reception


LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Department of Religious Studies has invited one of the foremost scholars on Pentecostal Christianity and charismatic Christian movements in Africa to speak at its annual awards reception and lecture next week.

Paul Gifford, the featured speaker for the annual FODORS Lecture, will give a talk titled "The Southern Shift of Christianity: The Nature & Appeal of Africa's New Pentecostal Churches" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, in the Kansas Union Kansas Room. The event is free and open to the public.

Gifford, a professor emeritus of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, is the author of "Ghana's New Christianity: Pentecostalism in a Globalising African Economy" (London: Hurst & Company, 2004); "Christianity, Politics and Public Life in Kenya" (London: Hurst & Company, 2009) and "Exporting the American Gospel: Global Christian Fundamentalism" Routledge, 1996 (coauthored with S. Brouwer, 1996).

The department reception begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union Mallott Room. It is free for financial contributors to the department or $10 for others who wish to attend. Contact Amanda Enneking by email for more information.
