US Secretary of Education to launch nationwide bus tour at KU

LAWRENCE – The U.S. Secretary of Education is launching his nationwide bus tour at the University of Kansas.

Secretary Miguel Cardona

Secretary Miguel Cardona will bring his “Back to School Bus Tour 2023” to KU for a public event and pep rally at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 5 in the Jayhawk Welcome Center. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

Cardona is expected to discuss how schools, families and communities can accelerate student learning and raise the bar in education. Specifically, he will focus on TRIO programs and teacher prep programs, with an emphasis on how these programs address affordability and diversity, as well as partnerships at both the K-12 and higher education levels.

“We are excited to welcome Secretary Cardona to KU,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod, who will introduce the secretary to the audience at Tuesday’s event. “KU strives to provide a world-class education for students, and we welcome this opportunity to highlight the opportunities and challenges associated with student learning in a rapidly changing world.”

In addition to addressing the audience, Cardona will have small-group meetings with various KU students, as well as administrators and researchers from the School of Education & Human Sciences, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and other KU units involved in teaching and student success.

After the KU visit, the bus tour will feature stops in Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
