The New York Times digital access expanded for KU community

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas community now has an additional reason to bookmark NYTimes.com beyond a daily attempt at Wordle. Anyone with a KU email address can access The New York Times for free. Site access was expanded through negotiations by KU Libraries and made possible through funding from KU Student Senate.

KU faculty and staff join the student body with unlimited access to NYTimes.com and The New York Times app, in addition to more than 150 years of archives, expanding a previous agreement that only included undergraduate and graduate students and more recent past issues. The platform is among more than 600 other databases in the Libraries’ A-Z Resource List.

As for Wordle, scores and streaks for the popular daily word game will be saved with an account; however, access to New York Times Games and Cooking sections are not included in the group subscription.

“KU Libraries offer a variety of print and digital means for our community to stay abreast of current and historical events, from the point of view of small hometown weekly papers to national daily papers like The New York Times,” said Sara Morris, KU Libraries’ head of collection strategy & development. “We’re glad to partner with the KU Student Senate in expanding this agreement to provide greater access and yet another important source of information.”

Digital access to The New York Times for students lasts through their anticipated graduation year, while faculty and staff will have four years of continuous access, after which they must re-authenticate through the NY Times Academic Site License Access page. Similarly, the KU community has access to The Wall Street Journal, supported through a collaborative effort between the KU Libraries and the School of Business, as well as newspaper aggregators like Access World News, Global Newsstream and Nexis Uni, among others.

In December, physical copies of daily periodicals returned to Watson Library, including a paper version of The New York Times. Additional newspaper titles available include The Lawrence Journal-World and Kansas City-based The Call, alongside magazines like Esquire, Harper’s Weekly, the New Yorker, People and Time. For more information on accessing current newspapers, read about the libraries’ extensive resources in the Subject Guide for Current Newspapers and News.
