LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas community is remembering Heidi Karn Barker, a functional systems analyst for KU Student Information Systems. Barker died May 8 at age 38.

“I am profoundly saddened to learn of the death of Heidi Karn Barker, who was a dedicated staff member working in support of our students and helping to ensure their success,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “On behalf of our entire university, I express my deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and all who knew her at KU.”

Karn Barker began working at KU in 2005 for the student financial aid office, where she worked as an administrative assistant and later as a program specialist. She moved to the international student and scholar services office in 2006 as an administrative associate.

Karn Barker was a “proud Jayhawk,” having graduated from KU and having worked for the university as a student and as a staff member, said Angie Dopp, who supervised Barker at the student information systems office, where she had worked since 2012.

“She made a lasting impact on her team and will be greatly missed,” Dopp said.

Survivors include a large network of friends and family and her husband, Brad Barker, who works on the financial reporting services team within the Office of the Controller.

“Heidi was a voracious reader, a talented pianist and the undisputed champion of Disney Trivial Pursuit,” Barker said.

A celebration of life for Karn Barker took place May 13 in McLouth.
