Construction causes road closures on KU Lawrence campus

LAWRENCE — Road closures will impact travel on and near the University of Kansas Lawrence campus throughout the summer months. Affected roads include Naismith Drive, 19th Street and Oread Avenue, and the first closures began May 16.

Running from May 16 to Aug. 12, Naismith Drive will be closed from the intersection with Sunnyside Avenue north to 15th Street. The intersection of 15th Street and Naismith Drive will still be partially open, allowing only northbound, eastbound and westbound traffic. The Allen Fieldhouse parking garage and lots 54 and 72 will be accessible from the west via Irving Hill Road.

However, there is a campus-based detour available for those who regularly travel to this area. From the 19th Street and Naismith, proceed west on 19th Street. Turn north on Ousdahl Road, and then at the traffic circle, take the third exit to proceed west on 18th Street, which turns into Irving Hill Road. Turn north on Burdick Drive, then turn east on 15th Street to reach the 15th Street and Naismith Drive intersection.

The demolition of Oliver Hall will close a separate area of 18th Street when it begins later this summer.

Naismith Drive south of campus from 19th Street to 21st Street and 19th Street east of Naismith Drive to Louisiana Street will also be closed during this time due to a city storm sewer project. All construction-related road closures are scheduled to be completed by Aug. 12.

The full list as well as more information about the planned road closures can be found here.
