KU Kudos: Celebrating recent Jayhawk faculty and staff achievements
LAWRENCE — It's time to celebrate Jayhawk colleagues' achievements: KU News Service accepted submissions and combed websites, social media and newsletters for recent external honors and awards for current faculty and staff at the Lawrence, Edwards and Medical Center campuses. Beth Bailey, Foundation Distinguished Professor of History, has received the Society for Military History’s Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for 2022. The award recognizes a body of contributions in the field of military history, extending over time and reflecting a spectrum of scholarly activity contributing significantly to the field.
Lynn Fisher, assistant professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine, Wichita, is among the members of the 2022 Leadership Kansas class announced this month. Leadership Kansas is a nationally recognized program focused on developing and motivating leaders from all four corners of Kansas.
Karissa Gilchrist, assistant professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine, Wichita, is among the 2022 40 Under 40 honorees. The Wichita Business Journal's 40 under 40 Awards dinner will be April 12 at the Hyatt Regency Wichita.
Jeffrey Holzbeierlein, department chair of urology, KU Medical Center, Kansas City, was named president of the Society of Urologic Oncology.
Roy Jensen, vice chancellor and director of The University of Kansas Cancer Center, was awarded the Kansas Masonic Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious award has been given to only three other individuals throughout the Kansas Masonic Foundation’s 50-year history.
Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, gave a presentation March 15 on Media in Russia for the Today in International Politics: Speaker Series (TIPSS), a program for teachers of AP Comparative Government. The presentation included speakers on several countries and had more than 100 attendees.
Devon Mihesuah, Cora Lee Beers Price Teaching Professor in International Cultural Understanding, has received recognition for two of her books. "Recovering Our Ancestors' Gardens: Indigenous Recipes and Guide to Diet and Fitness" was named the Best in the World Indigenous Book by Gourmand International. "Indigenous Food Sovereignty in the United States: Restoring Cultural Knowledge, Protecting Environments and Regaining Health" won the Society for Economic Botany's Best Book Award and Gourmand’s Best in the World University Press Book. The awards ceremony will take place in June in Sweden.
Shannon O'Lear, professor of geography & atmospheric science, along with KU doctoral student Nathan Pickett and alumnus John Biersack, are panelists for a virtual event March 25, "Geographers on the Russian Invasion: The Geopolitics of the War in Ukraine." The Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, CUNY, is hosting the panel, which begins at 11 a.m. CST.
Tarun Sabarwal, professor of economics, was invited as visiting research professor at the University of California at Berkeley to give a series of lectures on his new research monograph "Monotone Games" and also to present his new research on "Foundations of models with complementarities." This honor is a homecoming for Sabarwal, who received his doctorate in economics from Berkeley in 2000.
NSF-funded research by Elaina Sutley, associate professor of civil, environmental & architectural engineering, was incorporated into the newest version of ASCE 7, the loads standards for structural engineering adopted by building codes and used throughout the United States.
Hong Vu, associate professor of journalism, was a panelist for Theorizing Misinformation at the Misinformation and Global Communication Symposium on March 12, organized in Beijing as part of the launching ceremony of Online Media and Global Communication. Vu, doctoral student Nhung Nguyen and their collaborators also had an extended abstract titled “Dealing with Misinformation on COVID:19: Comparing the Use of Transparency and Accessibility in Fact-checking Practices across 74 countries” accepted to the symposium.
Jamie Wilson, academic adviser/coordinator for the Undergraduate Advising Center, was named a Best of Region Presentation Winner of a regional advising conference that took place March 14-16 in Lawrence. Her presentation was titled "UNIV 101 as a Mechanism for Intrusive Advising: Removing Barriers for Conditional Admit Students."

Hannah Collins' New Morse Code duo won the inaugural Impact Performance Grand Prize of Ariel AVANT, a competition run by the Boston-based Ariel Artists management company. New Morse Code, which includes Collins, assistant professor of music, and former KU faculty member Michael Compitello, will perform April 3 at the Lied Center of Kansas.
James Thompson, professor of special education, received a Fulbright Specialist Award to lead a series of plenary presentations and workshops in Portugal this semester.
