University Honors Program receives top rating

LAWRENCE — The University Honors Program (UHP) at the University of Kansas has received a top rating, along with six other programs, in INSIDE HONORS: Ratings and Reviews of 40 Public University Honors Programs.

Published biannually since 2012, the UHP has been top-rated in each of the publication’s previous editions. KU’s program attained its ranking for overall excellence in honors curriculum, student achievement of prestigious awards and its living-learning community in partnership with KU Student Housing.

The UHP curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature, with a breadth of honors courses available, and designed to combine classroom and experiential learning.

“We are proud to continue our 65-year tradition of challenging students who seek a rigorous, interdisciplinary education,” said Sarah Crawford-Parker, UHP director.

The program is also universitywide, with students from all schools and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Across the fall 2020 honors seminar program, faculty members from five schools and 25 departments contributed to teaching participants.

With the top rating, KU joins the ranks of six other programs: Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University, Macaulay Honors College at City University of New York, Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University, Schreyer Honors College at Pennsylvania State University, the South Carolina University Honors College and Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas in Austin.

The program comprises approximately 1,700 students. First-year students are selected based on a portfolio of their high school work, and current KU students are also encouraged to apply to join the program after their first semester at the university.

KU Honors was established in 1955 by a grant from the Carnegie Foundation and was a founding member of the National Collegiate Honors Council in 1966. The program has more than 8,000 alumni, including recipients of KU’s Summerfield and Watkins-Berger Scholarships.
