Community invited to new series 'Education & Act: Civic Engagement in 2020'

LAWRENCE — Beginning in spring 2020, University of Kansas organizations will bring the campus and Lawrence communities an opportunity to learn more about voting and democracy ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

“Educate & Act: Civic Engagement in 2020,” a collaborative three-part series, will feature experts including KU faculty, staff and students. Co-sponsored by The Commons, Center for Service Learning and the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity, the events will center on knowledge acquisition and building capacities for creating change in our communities.

The series begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, with “Part I - Understanding the Census.” The event will explore how census data is collected and used as well as its potential effect on our communities. Panelists are Tiara Floyd, student body president; Donna Ginther, professor of economics and interim director of the Institute for Policy & Social Research; Xan Wedel, senior research data engineer with IPSR, and Virginia Phillips, U.S. Census Bureau.
