Dole Institute of Politics receives $200K grant from Newman’s Own Foundation

LAWRENCE – The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas has received a $200,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation, the independent foundation created by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman.

The grant will provide funding for the Dole Fellowship Program, a staple of the institute’s offerings. Dole fellows host a series of discussion group sessions each semester that are free and open to students and community members. Each fellow selects unique topic and hosts a variety of guest speakers over the course of seven weeks.

In the bipartisan spirit of the Dole Institute, these discussion groups cover a range of philosophical views and function as a venue for thought-provoking conversation in a small-group setting. The meetings foster a greater appreciation for civic involvement and encourage student interaction with the fellow and guest speakers.

“We are extremely grateful for this grant from Newman’s Own Foundation,” said Dole Institute director Bill Lacy. “Our Dole Fellowship Program is one of our most unique offerings and has facilitated many connections, internships and even job opportunities for KU students.”

Kelly Dietrich will serve as the institute’s fall 2018 Dole Fellow, hosting a discussion group series on the midterm elections and their intersection with technology and data. The institute has hosted more than 50 fellows with a wide range of topics, including:

  • Jim Jonas, on the rise of the independent political movement in the U.S.
  • Judge Joyce London Ford, on the intersection of politics, public policy and the law
  • Judy Lloyd, on women in public service and leadership
  • Gen. Roosevelt Barfield, on political-military affairs

Newman’s Own Foundation uses all net profits and royalties from the sale of Newman’s Own food and beverage products for charitable purposes. Since 1982, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have donated over $500 million to thousands of charities around the world.

The Dole Institute of Politics is dedicated to promoting political and civic participation as well as civil discourse in a bipartisan, philosophically balanced manner. It is located in KU’s West District and houses the Dole Archive and Special Collections. Through its robust public programming, congressional archive and museum, the Dole Institute strives to celebrate public service and the legacies of U.S. Senators Bob Dole and Elizabeth Dole.

More information on all programs, as well as ongoing additions to the schedule, can be found on the Dole Institute’s website, www.doleinstitute.org.
