Brian White named general counsel and vice chancellor for legal affairs

LAWRENCE — A seasoned attorney with extensive legal and leadership experience at some of the nation’s top public research universities will be joining the University of Kansas.

Brian White, currently the chief counsel at UConn Health – the clinical, research and academic arm of the University of Connecticut – has been named KU’s new general counsel and vice chancellor for legal affairs. He will begin his appointment Aug. 2.

“We are extremely pleased to have someone of Brian’s caliber joining the University of Kansas,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “Brian has extensive experience at some of the nation’s top institutions of higher education, which makes him a great fit and a valuable asset for KU. I look forward to having him at our university and as a member of my leadership team.”

“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to work with Chancellor Girod and the rest of the KU leadership team,” White said, “and I look forward to collaborating with the faculty, staff and students that make the University of Kansas a top-tier public institution.”

In his new role, White will lead KU's Office of the General Counsel, a team of nine attorneys and seven staff providing counsel, assistance and information to university employees about the policies and procedures of the university, the Board of Regents, the state of Kansas and the federal government.

At UConn Health, White has legal oversight of clinical, research and academic areas for a 5,000-employee, $1 billion health care business. Prior to joining UConn Health, White served as associate general counsel and interim VP of facilities and support services for University of Wisconsin Health, as senior assistant director and legal counsel for University of Iowa Health Care and as an associate with Boundas, Skarzynski, Walsh & Black LLC in Chicago. He earned his law and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Iowa.

White will be joined in Kansas by his wife, Alicia, and their four children.

“We have greatly appreciated our time in New England and will miss everyone we’ve met,” White said. “But, deep down we are Midwesterners at heart and are excited to return home."
