Center announces name change, reaffirms commitment to supporting community engagement at KU

LAWRENCE — The Center for Civic and Social Responsibility has announced it will return to using its original name, the Center for Service Learning.

“The unit began in 2005 as a response to student initiatives that challenged the administration to invest in and link community service with the curriculum in a formal way,”  said John Augusto, center director. “Many students coming to KU expect to volunteer as a part of their experience, and service learning is a familiar term to identify this activity. By changing the name, it’s our intention to demonstrate the different ways our students find their pathway to service, which includes volunteer work, serving as a coach or mentor, conducting community-based research, advocating for a particular cause or program, and working on becoming a social innovator.“

The center will continue its work to support faculty community engagement as well as to serve as a KU contact for many Lawrence and Douglas County community organizations.

The new name will also include a new website, www.csl.ku.edu, and a new program, Pathways to Service. The Center will continue to be part of the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
