Prisinzano selected to lead NIH Study Section

LAWRENCE — The National Institute of Health’s Center for Scientific Review has appointed Thomas Prisinzano, chair of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the School of Pharmacy, chairperson of the Drug Discovery for the Nervous System Study Section.

The Drug Discovery for the Nervous System study section reviews grant applications to the NIH with the ultimate goal of discovering new therapies for treating or preventing disorders of the nervous system, including drug abuse, that will eventually lead to FDA clinical trials. As chair of this study section, Prisinzano will ensure the NIH peer review process remains effective and efficient.

According to the NIH, “members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.”

School of Pharmacy Dean Ken Audus said Prisinzano’s invitation to serve as chair illustrates how highly regarded he is amongst his scientific peers.

“Tom’s prominence in the field of medicinal chemistry continues to rise, and we are fortunate to have him leading the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at KU,” Audus said. “His leadership and contributions outside the school bring deserved recognition of his expertise and strengthen the scientific community as a whole.”

Prisinzano will serve two years as chairperson of the committee, with his term coming to an end June 30, 2015.
