Department of Architecture announces new leader

LAWRENCE — John Gaunt, dean of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning, has announced that Paola Sanguinetti, associate professor, will become the Department of Architecture’s new chair.

She replaces Nils Gore, associate professor, who served as interim chair for the past three years. Her three-year term begins July 1.

"This is an exciting assignment, and I am eager to contribute to the goals of the School of Architecture, Design and Planning," she said.

Sanguinetti has taught in the Department of Architecture since 1997 while taking time out to earn advanced degrees and pursue employment in private practice. She earned her doctorate in architecture, with a major in building technology and a minor in design computing, from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2012.

She was awarded a master's degree in advanced architectural design from Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in 1993 and graduated from KU with a bachelor's degree in architecture 1992.

Her experience working in architectural practice includes stints in the offices of two world-renowned architects, Emilio Ambasz and Zaha Hadid.

Sanguinetti prepares graduates for the challenges they will face in architectural practice by emphasizing sustainable design strategies, energy efficiency and proficiency in the use of a wide range of digital modeling tools.

Her major field of research is in building technology and the use of computational models for design and analysis. Her current work deals with design computation, including building energy simulation, building information modeling and integrated project delivery.

While studying at Georgia Tech she specialized in performance-based design and risk analysis for the increasingly important field of building façade retrofits.

In the course of her career Sanguinetti has received more than a dozen fellowships and awards, including a 2010 National Science Foundation ADVANCE Program Women in Excellence Award and first prize in the International Building Performance Simulation Competition in 2009.
