LAWRENCE — Tammara Durham has been named vice provost for student affairs at the University of Kansas. Durham has served as interim vice provost since last September.

“Tammara’s commitment to helping students makes her the ideal individual to lead student affairs,” Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter said. “Student Affairs plays an important role in the experience of our students and ensuring they are on track to stay at KU and graduate. I am confident she will continue moving the organization forward.”

Durham was named interim vice provost for student affairs as part of a realignment in September 2011. Prior to that, she had served as associate vice provost for Student Success since January 2011. Durham served as director of the University Advising Center from 2004 to 2011.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to continue creating a supporting environment for KU students,” Durham said. “Student Affairs plays an important role in implementing Bold Aspirations, and I look forward to working with all of our programs to enhance the unique academic experience we offer at KU.”

Durham joined KU in 1998 as assistant director of the Freshman-Sophomore Advising Center. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southwest Missouri State University and earned her doctorate from KU in May 2009.

The vice provost for student affairs is the senior student affairs officer for the main campus in Lawrence and is responsible for student life, support and leadership programs, student auxiliary services and student-supported wellness programs. The Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs coordinates and develops student support services and programs and serves as an advocate for student needs across the university community that contribute to overall academic success.

The student affairs units and programs include Counseling and Psychological Services, Department of Student Housing, Hilltop Child Development Center, KU Memorial Unions, KU Recreation Services, Legal Services for Students, Student Health Services, Student Involvement and Leadership Center, Student Conduct, Parent Programs and Student Money Management. The vice provost for student affairs also serves as the primary liaison to Student Senate. In cooperation with the School of Education, the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs oversees the graduate assistant internship program in higher education.
