LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Music has announced spring dates for the 2012 KU Opera Gala.

The first of two performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the Lied Center. Tickets will be sold through the Lied Center Box Office, (785) 864-2787, and are $7 general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

The second performance will take place at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Kansas City at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5. Tickets are free due to the support of sponsors Reach Out Kansas Inc., the Law Offices of Smithyman & Zakoura and the Zakoura Family Foundation.

The KU Opera Gala will showcase the talents of the KU Symphony Orchestra, along with KU choral and voice students, as they perform excerpts from numerous beloved operas. The program will include performances from such operas as “Nabucco,” “Carmen,” “Die Zauberflöte,” “Madama Butterfly,” “Rigoletto,” “Candide,” “Falstaff,” “The Elixir of Love,” “Das Rheingold,” and many more.

“The KU Opera Gala is a special event in this year's KU Symphony Orchestra's concert season,” said David Neely, KU director of orchestral activities. “Its purpose is to give our students an opportunity to present a colorful mix of highlights from notable operas in a semi-staged concert setting.” Neely added, “The program features arias, ensembles, overtures and choruses from composers such as Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Bizet, Wagner and Strauss. I am grateful for the support of the voice and opera faculty and the KU choral department, and for the generous support of our sponsors for the Kauffman Center performance.”
