2011 report reflects downward trend in Lawrence campus crime

More Information

LAWRENCE – The number of criminal offenses reported on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus declined in 2011, according to information released today by the Public Safety Office.

Violent crime, defined by the FBI as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, continues to account for a small portion of all crime reported. There were only two violent crimes reported on campus in 2011 – an aggravated assault and a robbery.

“We hope to continue the general downward trend in crime on campus, with the support of the university administration, the increased use of video technology and the efforts of the police and security officers who patrol every day,” said KU Police Chief Ralph Oliver.

KU recently installed signs on campus indicating that security cameras are in use on campus. The number of security cameras on campus continues to grow. “The presence of cameras can be a deterrent to crime, but we have also found them to be very useful in solving crimes, including the man peeking into showers at McCollum and the arrest of three auto burglars in the GSP parking lot,” Oliver said.

Reported crimes are down 26 percent since 2001. A full listing of crime statistics from 2001 to 2011 can be found online.
