Business school creates professional mentorship program

More Information

LAWRENCE — Students at the University of Kansas School of Business have a new tool for professional development with the school’s business student mentorship program. The program, which kicks off this month, will pair alumni and other professionals with current undergraduate and MBA students in an effort to provide career advice and guidance as they prepare for life after college.

Mentors will be paired with students based on shared professional interests, career history and the mentee’s post-graduation goals. Participating mentors will become an invaluable resource to students as they search for jobs and move into the workforce. Mentors will be encouraged to engage in regular communication and an annual face-to-face meeting with their mentees.

“Career guidance is one of the most important components of a business education,” said Dean Neeli Bendapudi. “Students need networking opportunities in order to be successful once they leave the university. A business mentorship program will connect current students with our impressive body of graduates. We take considerable pride in our more than 25,000 active alumni. Business Jayhawks are changing the world, and their advice and experience will give current students the direction and confidence they need to be successful.”

The mentorship program aims to create a diverse base of professionals willing to connect with students from each area of the school, including the Master of Business Administration program. The school will begin the program with 20 initial students, formally connecting each student to a mentor by March 2012.

“Our mentoring program will provide win-win scenarios to both students and mentors,” said Jennifer Jordan, Business Career Services Center director. “Not only will this program enable our students to learn from the successes of their mentors, but it will also facilitate a forum for alumni and other university supporters to stay connected to the school. Students stand to benefit from the guidance of professionals in the workplace. Mentoring will elevate the career prospects of our students and also provide enjoyment to those providing the mentoring. Everyone stands to benefit.”

Participating students will be required to attend an information session hosted by the Business Career Services Center before connecting with their mentors. The BCSC will consider career interests and potential geographic limitations in making mentorship connections.

The mentorship program is coordinated by the Business Career Services Center, a career development initiative within the School of Business.
