KU faculty 2nd in nation for Fulbrights

More Information

LAWRENCE — More University of Kansas faculty were awarded prestigious Fulbright scholarships this year than at any other university in the United States save one, according to new Chronicle of Higher Education rankings.

The Fulbright award enables recipients to teach and conduct research overseas for a year. KU’s nine faculty winners placed second to Pennsylvania State University, which earned 14.

“This ranking reflects our faculty’s outstanding achievements and the importance we place on being an international research university. It also indicates how KU students have unparalleled opportunities to learn from professors who are leaders in their fields and offer global perspectives,” said Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little.

Eleven KU students also received Fulbright scholarships, placing KU 27th in the nation and first in the Big 12 for student awards. Like their faculty counterparts, students can study overseas for the 2011-12 academic year.

“KU exists to educate leaders, and these students are well on their way to becoming leaders in their communities and world. Plus, the opportunity to study abroad, either through a Fulbright or through one of KU’s more than 130 overseas programs, is invaluable to students whose careers will increasingly have an international focus,” said Gray-Little.

All-time, KU faculty members have earned 297 Fulbrights, while KU students have earned 432.

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Since its inception in 1946, it has provided more than 310,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
