KJHK listed among '10 Great College Radio Stations'

More Information

LAWRENCE — KJHK, the University of Kansas student-operated radio station, received recognition from The Washington Post in its listing of “10 Great College Radio Stations” published online by the Post on Oct. 13. The station was listed second within a list of 10 outstanding student-run FM radio stations.

The Post article by Daniel de Vise recognizes the important role that college radio still plays in the arenas of student life and cultural education. In the article, de Vise asserts that despite a growing trend of universities selling off student station licenses, transforming student stations into nonstudent community stations, or relegating student broadcasting to online streaming only, terrestrial radio is still the best way for student radio stations to reach the widest possible audience, and is a vital part of student expression and the college experience. He concludes his piece with a list of “10 Great College Radio Stations” that both remain on the FM airwaves and remain entirely student-run. KJHK was listed second on de Vise’s list of outstanding stations.

“We’re honored to be included in a roster like this and alongside some very impressive company,” said KJHK General Manager Tom Johnson. “What’s really unique about this particular distinction is that it’s more about what the station has always been, not just what it happens to be doing right now. It’s a broader recognition of all KJHK students, past and present, their contributions to the medium and what KU’s station means to the bigger world of college radio.”

The Washington Post’s recognition of KJHK comes on the heels of an August 2011 Princeton Review release that ranked KJHK as the 15th-best college radio station in the nation.

KJHK is a student organization administered through the Union Programs Department of the KU Memorial Unions. The station provides KU students with a unique and personal development experience centered in the communication of culture. More information about KJHK can be found online.
