KU to host National Hazing Prevention Week activities

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas will host National Hazing Prevention Week from Monday, Sept. 19 to Friday, Sept. 23 with events and activities to raise awareness about and eliminate hazing.

National Hazing Prevention Week seeks to bring attention to the problem of hazing across the country and provides an opportunity for campuses and national organizations to plan educational activities for students.

“Hazing is an enormous issue – one that reaches deeply into higher education and beyond. To help our students succeed, we are making strides in addressing and eliminating hazing,” said Nick Kehrwald, KU student conduct officer.

National Hazing Prevention Week is just one part of the year-round hazing education initiatives planned collaboratively with the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success, Student Senate, Department of Student Housing, Kansas Athletics, All Scholarship Hall Council, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association, Air Force, Army and Naval ROTC, Alumni Association, and various student organizations and academic departments.

National Hazing Prevention Week Events include:

Monday, Sept. 19
- Keynote address by Don McPherson, former NFL quarterback and equality advocate, on hazing prevention, with a welcome from the Vice Provost for Student Success.
7 p.m. Kansas Union (Woodruff Auditorium, 5th floor)

Tuesday, Sept. 20
- “The Generation Coming” presentation by Don McPherson for KU faculty and staff.
9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Kansas Union (Alderson Auditorium, 4th floor)

- Pledge Card: Students will have the opportunity to sign a card pledging to not haze, help create a hazing prevention video and sign up to work on hazing prevention at KU.
10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Wescoe Beach

Wednesday, Sept. 21
- Pledge Card: Students will have an additional opportunity to sign a card pledging to not haze, help create a hazing prevention video and sign up to work on hazing prevention at KU.
10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Wescoe Beach

Thursday, Sept. 22
- Advisor brown bag luncheon on Risk Management presented by the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Success.
Noon. Kansas Union (Jayhawk Room, 5th floor)

Friday, Sept. 23
- Website Contest for Students: Take a five-question quiz on hazing prevention education at preventhazing.ku.edu and be entered into a pool to win prizes.
Take the quiz by Sept 23 to be entered.
