Second pharmacy dean candidate to present April 30
LAWRENCE — A professor of pharmacotherapy at the University of North Texas System College of Pharmacy is the second candidate who will take part in on-campus interviews for the position of the University of Kansas dean of pharmacy.
Professor Michael Jann is one of three candidates invited to continue in the search process. He will offer a public presentation at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, in Room 1020 of Pharmacy Building on the Lawrence campus. Each candidate has been asked to present on the topic “Advancing the Stature and Impact of the KU School of Pharmacy.” Faculty and staff on the KU Medical Center campuses in Kansas City and Wichita will be able to participate through a special audio-video feed. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Members of the KU community are invited to attend the presentation and provide feedback to the search committee, led by Michael Branicky, professor of electrical engineering & computer science and past dean of the School of Engineering.
Jann has been a professor at the UNT School of Pharmacy since 2013. He served as chair of the Department of Pharmacotherapy between 2013 and 2017. Between 1988 and 2013, he was at Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy, where he was ultimately promoted to professor of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical sciences and awarded an endowed chair in neuropsychopharmacology in 2005. During his time at Mercer, Jann held a number of leadership roles. He was program director of the Psychiatric Pharmacy Program from 1988 to 1993 and director of the Center for Clinical Research between 1990 and 2006. Jann served as chair of the Department of Clinical and Administrative Sciences (pharmacy practice) from 2002 to 2013 and served as interim chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice during the 2001-2002 academic year. Prior to joining Mercer, Jann was clinical assistant professor of pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas at Austin and also clinical associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Jann’s record includes a variety of service activities at his institutions, including serving on the Curriculum Committee, the Clinical Preceptor Committee and the Student Performance Committee at UNTS College of Pharmacy. At Mercer University he served on the Environmental Safety committee, the Academic Performance Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Institutional Review Board. He is a member of several national professional organizations and has an extensive record of service in many, including the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Jann has been a principal investigator or co-PI on more than 85 funded research projects. His broad research interests include analysis of the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics effects in a variety of areas, including neuroleptics and antidepressants, pharmacogenetics and age differences, anticonvulsant use in psychiatry and interaction between psychotropic drugs, pharmacotherapy of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, and more.
He is a prolific author, having contributed several chapters, newsletter articles and journal articles in publications that include the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacotherapy. He is co-editor of the text Applied Clinical Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Psychopharmacological Agents, published in 2016. He has been a reviewer or a member of the editorial board for a number of scholarly and professional publications. Titles include CNS Drugs, the ACCPharmacology Newsletter, the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics, and more.
Jann earned a doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from the University of Southern California. He has a bachelor of science in biology from California State University at Los Angeles. He completed a postdoctoral residency in psychiatric pharmacy practice at the University of Tennessee. He has additional professional training in the NONMEM Program, as well as at the University of California San Francisco, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in San Antonio.
The university will release the name of each candidate roughly one business day before their respective campus visits. A public presentation from the remaining candidate will take place from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m. May 7 in Room 1020 of the Pharmacy Building.
The presentations will be recorded and available for viewing online after the final candidate has appeared on campus. Members of the KU community are encouraged to offer their impressions and observation of each candidate online. For greatest consideration, the search committee requests that feedback be submitted by May 9; the comment period closes completely May 20.
About the School of Pharmacy
With a presence on three KU campuses — Lawrence, Kansas City, and Wichita — the School of Pharmacy offers the only pharmacy program in the state. In 2017, the school received more than $11 million in National Institutes of Health research funding, ranking fourth in the nation for such grants.
Approximately 150 candidates are accepted annually into the Pharm.D. professional degree program after completing two years of pre-pharmacy coursework. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and students in the class of 2018 achieved a first-time pass rate of 100% on the North American Pharmacists Licensure Exam (NAPLEX).
