KU selects 2018-2019 Student Employee of the Year
LAWRENCE – The University Career Center has announced the 2018-2019 Student Employee of the Year (SEOTY). This year’s award was presented to Abigail Byrd of the Institute for Policy & Social Research on April 16. The SEOTY award recognizes student employees who embody service excellence, dedication and whose academic achievements remain stellar. Byrd received an engraved plaque and a $500 award. She will be entered into the National Student Employee of the Year competition.
“Not only is Abby capable of doing complex, challenging and tedious work, she is – more importantly — willing and often eager to do such work. She is excited to learn new things and is always willing to pitch in to make sure the office is running smoothly. It is delightful to work with someone who, from the start, showed a relentless commitment to doing the best job she can on any job she is asked to do,” Genna Hurd, Byrd’s supervisor, said on the application.
Sixty-four students, a record number, were nominated and recognized during the awards ceremony. A team of volunteer reviewers selected five finalists, including the winner. In addition to Byrd, the finalists included:
- Sara Hancock Fiene, Spencer Museum of Art
- Jacob Herrmann, Writing Center
- Madison Keith, University Career Center
- Jordan Young, Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs
