KU Libraries announce staff member selected for Institute for Research Design in Librarianship

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Libraries are pleased to announce that Greta Valentine, data and research analyst, was selected for the Institute for Research Design in Librarianship (IRDL), which began in June 2019. 

IRDL is a highly competitive research program, and this year, 23 applicants were chosen to participate in the institute’s annual workshop. Valentine is the third member from KU Libraries to be selected for IRDL, joining the 2018 participants: Rebecca Orozco, faculty engagement librarian for science and engineering, and Angela Rathmel, head of acquisitions and resource sharing.

Valentine received a full scholarship to attend the eight-day workshop at Loyola Marymount University, where participants trained in survey design, interviewing techniques and other integral research methods. Participants received expert instruction on research design and one-on-one assistance to refine their research projects. 

“I was able to make some great connections during the institute, including finding a research collaborator,” Valentine said. “Having the expertise and input of my cohort has already provided me with support in taking my research skills to a higher level.”

Valentine’s research explores how to document and employ sound privacy practices, particularly regarding the protection of patrons' identifiable data. 

“Participating in IRDL has given me the opportunity to work towards a peer-reviewed article, as well as to become more informed about improving privacy and data protection practices,” said Valentine. “Joining the cohort is invaluable at this stage in my career, and I look forward to honing my research interests in conversation with my co-participants.”

In addition to attending the intensive workshop, Valentine will receive support from IRDL for her project throughout the coming year, including the opportunity to partner with a mentor who shares a similar area of focus.
