Associate professor earns Emerging Scholar honor for international management research

LAWRENCE — Minyoung Kim, associate professor of strategy and international business at the University of Kansas School of Business, will receive the 2020 International Management (IM) Division FIU Emerging Scholar Award from the Academy of Management.

The award recognizes Kim’s research contributions, which largely focus on the intersection of strategic management and international business. His recent research has explored barriers to imitation, value appropriation, innovation strategies, political strategies and social network analysis.

“One of the main contributions of my research is illuminating how international markets, imbued with a higher degree of market frictions and heterogeneity than domestic markets, can provide a unique set of opportunities for firms to achieve their strategic goals for value creation and appropriation,” Kim said. “As such, understanding this nature of international business will help managers gain more from their investments by simultaneously increasing the size of the pie and their slice of it.”

He will be recognized at the IM Division business meeting at the 2020 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. The annual meeting had been set for Aug. 7-10 in Vancouver, British Columbia, but will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each year the IM Division selects a junior scholar to receive the award based on various aspects of their research, including productivity, independence and significant impact in the field of international management. Kim was nominated by professors from six external institutions. Former recipients of the award include researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and Harvard Business School.

The Academy of Management, the preeminent professional association in the field of management, previously has recognized Kim’s research with several awards, including the Barry M. Richman Best Dissertation Award and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Best Paper in Global Strategy Award. He also has received the Aalto University "That's Interesting!" Award from the Academy of International Business. Kim’s work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Management, the Journal of Management Studies, and Strategic Management Journal. He serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of International Business Studies, Management and Organization Review and Multinational Business Review.
