KU mathematics department hosting scholastic activities in April

LAWRENCE – The Department of Mathematics at the University of Kansas is expecting hundreds of elementary, middle and high school students from the region to visit in April to participate in annual competitions and workshops to celebrate national Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month (MSAM). This marks the 20th year that the department has organized activities for hundreds of students to learn about the math, engineering and science fields.

The MSAM Proclamation Ceremony by Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly took place March 29 in the Governor’s Office "to proclaim the month of April as Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month in Kansas and urge citizens to participate in this observance." Lisa Larsen, Lawrence mayor, proclaimed MSAM on April 2 at the City Commission meeting.

The Mathematics and Statistics Competition will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in 405 Snow Hall. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top students in each category. The competition has three levels: third through fifth grades, middle school and high school. All students are encouraged to participate. More information is available here.

The math department will also host workshops April 10 and 17 for fifth-graders at two elementary schools.

Along with contests and activities for the students, the mathematics department has invited Colin Adams, Thomas T. Read Professor of Mathematics at Williams College and co-author of the KU adopted calculus textbook, to be the speaker for the 2019 Russell Bradt Undergraduate Colloquium on April 25. An enthusiastic presenter, Adams talks about learning mathematics in an entertaining way. The general public is welcome to join this event from 4 to 5 p.m. April 25 in 330 Strong Hall.

More information about the MSAM 2019 events is available here, or contact Kerrie Brecheisen at 785-864-3651 (kbrech@ku.edu) or KU MSAM Program Coordinator and Professor Bozenna Pasik-Duncan at bozenna@ku.edu.
