Spencer Research Library announces Derrick E. White as the 2019 Alyce Hunley Whayne Visiting Researchers Travel Award winner

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Libraries announce the recipient of the fourth annual Alyce Hunley Whayne Visiting Researchers Travel Award winner is Derrick E. White.

A scholar of modern black history with an emphasis on intellectual, political and sports history, White is currently the visiting associate professor of history at Dartmouth University. As part of his visit to KU, White will present “Ball and Parlay: Black Culture and Black College” at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 13, at Kenneth Spencer Research Library. The event is free and open to the public.

The Alyce Hunley Whayne Visiting Researchers Travel Award extends travel funds to any external faculty member, undergraduate, graduate student or independent researcher who is undertaking a research project on the African American experience in Kansas using materials in Spencer Research Library. The library holds significant collections on the African American experience, including personal and family papers and organizational records, providing a valuable repository for primary sources.

During his time on campus, White will perform research for his upcoming book, “Blood, Sweat, and Tears: Florida A&M and the Rise and Fall of a Black College Football Dynasty.”

The award was made possible by a generous gift from Sandra Gautt in honor of her late mother, Alyce Hunley Whayne. Gautt has also donated family papers to the Kansas Collection in Spencer Research Library.

“KU Libraries are grateful for Sandra’s ongoing support and generosity,” said Kevin L. Smith, dean of libraries. “Each year, it is a pleasure to host visiting researchers and hear about their fascinating work.”
