School of Architecture, Design & Planning's name changes

Thu, 07/06/2017

LAWRENCE — Starting July 1, the School of Architecture, Design & Planning’s name became the School of Architecture & Design.

“On the face of it, it might seem like a simple change,” said Dean Mahesh Daas. “But since we seldom have the opportunity to revisit what we call ourselves, we invested a tremendous amount of time and energy into this decision. The new name just better reflects our vision, which is to be 'the pioneering force for global impact through design.'"

That work included surveys of alumni, students, faculty and staff. A “Reboot Blitz” in January, attended by some 70 stakeholders, generated more than 100 alternatives, which were evaluated by an internal task force.

“To paraphrase William of Occam, ‘All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one.’ The school’s new url is, and to keep things short we are already referring to ourselves as Arc/D,” Daas said.
