School of Education continues free professional development in KC

OVERLAND PARK - The School of Education at the University of Kansas will host the second session of the 2017-2018 Strategies Event Series at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the KU Edwards Campus.

The second session of the series, "English Learners: The Myths & Realities" will feature Karen Jorgensen, multi-term lecturer from the Department of Curriculum & Teaching. The presentation will include an interactional discussion for classroom teachers as well as an experiential approach through the myths and realities as they relate to English learners. The time includes research and practice through language immersion, the stages of second/additional language learning, legal considerations and a time to exchange resources that support English learners in the PK-16 setting.

Jorgensen's session will take place in Room 120 of the BEST Building. The session is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required.

The third and final session of the 2017-2018 series, "The Shared Leadership Approach to Reaching a Collaborative Vision," is scheduled for April 28. Joseph Novak and Deborah Perbeck from the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies will present a session designed for building- and district-level leaders as well as learning/instructional coaches in PK-12 settings. 

The first session of the series, which took place in November 2017, featured Reva Friedman, associate professor in the curriculum & teaching department, and Cindy Swartz, technology integration coordinator for USD 232 De Soto. They presented "Mindset Makes the Difference | Part II."
