Board of Regents approves departmental name change in German studies

LAWRENCE – Effective immediately, the German studies bachelor and master's degree programs are now housed in the Department of German Studies.

The new name replaces the former Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures, a change approved by the Kansas Board of Regents on Oct. 30. The department introduced its German studies major and minor in August 2013 and changed the name of its master's degree to German studies in 2016.

"The new designation reflects our interdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum,” said Professor Nina Vyatkina, department chair. “We encourage students to enhance their study of the language and cultures of German-speaking Europe by taking related courses in disciplines such as history and political science."

The Department of German Studies is part of the School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures at the University of Kansas. The school was established in fall 2014 and emphasizes KU’s commitment to language and culture for a 21st century education in a globalized world.
