KPR to broadcast governor's State of the State address

LAWRENCE — The state budget, education funding and tax policy are likely to be key issues when Gov. Sam Brownback delivers his State of the State address, and KPR will bring it to you live.

The coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, the first week of the 2014 Kansas legislative session. The speech will last approximately 30 minutes and will be followed by the Democratic Party response. Rep. Paul Davis, a candidate for governor, will give that address.

KPR Statehouse Bureau Chief Stephen Koranda will co-host the public radio and public TV coverage. After the speeches, KPR will offer in-depth analysis with KPR News Director J. Schafer and Burdett Loomis, University of Kansas political science professor.

“It has been a tumultuous year for the state, and we’re heading into an election year,” Schafer said. “The governor’s speech will lay out his priorities and touch on issues that will dominate the legislative session and the coming campaign.”

Kansas Action for Children in Topeka is the exclusive underwriting sponsor for KPR’s broadcast of the State of the State address.

KPR’s coverage of the speech is offered to other public radio stations in Kansas for free. Listeners outside of the KPR broadcast area should check with their local station about coverage plans.

KPR, a 15-time Kansas Association of Broadcasters Station of the Year, licensed to KU, broadcasts on 91.5 FM in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison, 90.3 FM in Chanute, and 99.5 FM and 97.9 FM in Manhattan.
