Information sessions will address concealed carry concerns

LAWRENCE — Recent changes to concealed carry law in Kansas have many on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus asking questions.

The Office of the Provost, in conjunction with the Office of Diversity & Equity, the KU Public Safety Office and academic units, has scheduled a number of information programs to help faculty, staff and students better prepare for uncertainty related to the law’s effect on campus activities and interactions.

De-escalation Sessions

• Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2:30-4 p.m., Woodruff Auditorium, Kansas Union
• Thursday, Aug. 31, 3-4:30 p.m., Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union. This session is primarily geared toward graduate teaching assistants, graduate research assistants and graduate assistants. Watch the live stream here.

Active Shooter Response Sessions

• Sept. 5, 10-11:30 a.m., Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union
• Sept. 8, 1-2:30 p.m., Big 12 Room, Kansas Union. Watch the live stream here.

The session topics are in direct response to specific requests and will be led by officers in the KU Public Safety Office. The programs are open to all members of the KU community, and two sessions will be live streamed on the concealed carry website. Interested GTAs, GRAs and GAs are strongly encouraged to attend the Thursday, Aug. 31, de-escalation program. Organizers hope to address questions related to the special role these individuals have as both student and employee.
