First candidate for dean of business to present Friday

LAWRENCE — James Guthrie, interim dean at the University of Kansas School of Business, will make a public presentation Friday, April 14, as a candidate for dean for the school.

He is the first of three candidates for the position who will make public presentations during their respective campus visits. His presentation will be from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in Capitol Federal Hall Auditorium, Room 1111. A reception will follow.

His research interests include human resource policies and practices and firm performance, employment instability and reward systems. His publications include several book chapters, numerous journal articles and refereed conference proceedings.

Guthrie, the William and Judy Docking Professor in Business, has been interim dean for the school since July 2016, and he has overseen continued growth in undergraduate enrollment and several graduate programs, as well as the launch of a new major, certificates and programs. He has also taken part in successful fund-raising activities.

He has been a member of the KU faculty since 1988, holding a number of academic and leadership roles. Prior to his appointment as interim dean, Guthrie served two years as associate dean for academic affairs of the school. In that capacity, he was responsible for curricular and co-curricular activities of undergraduate and master’s level programs. The school also saw the launch of the Davis Center for Figure Sense during this period. From 2011 to 2016, he was co-chair of the business school’s building committee. He has received numerous teaching and mentoring honors and awards and has been a visiting professor at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, the Consortium of University for International Business Studies in Paderno del Grappa, Italy; and the University of Limerick, Ireland.

He earned his doctorate in human resource management from the University of Maryland. He also holds an MBA and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, both from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

The dean of business search committee — led by Michael Branicky, dean of the School of Engineering — invites students, faculty and staff to attend the presentations and provide feedback of their impressions. Each candidate will prepare a presentation on the topic: “Advancing the Stature and Impact of the KU School of Business.”

The university will release information about each candidate roughly 48 hours before the candidate’s visit.  The schedule of public appearances:

  • Candidate 1 presentation: 1 p.m. Friday, April 14, Capitol Federal Hall Auditorium, Room 1111
  • Candidate 2 presentation: Friday, April 28, time and location TBA
  • Candidate 3 presentation: Tuesday, May 2, time and location TBA

Candidate presentations will be recorded and available for viewing online after the final candidate has appeared on campus. Evaluations of all candidates are due by noon May 3.

The School of Business is home to more than 110 faculty and staff and over 2,200 students at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level. The school is one of only 185 schools with AACSB accreditation, and it has an operating budget of $25 million. In May 2016, the school opened Capitol Federal Hall, a state-of-the-art $70.5 million facility funded primarily by private donations that provides leading-edge technology and education resources for its faculty, staff and students.
