Expert can discuss talks about Iran's nuclear program

LAWRENCE — Raj Bhala, associate dean for International and Comparative Law and Rice Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas School of Law, is available to speak with media about ongoing talks about Iran’s nuclear program and an extension of deadlines to reach a deal.

Diplomats from the so-called P5+1, including the United States, United Kingdom, Russian, China, Germany and France are taking part in talks in Vienna with the intention of Iran ending its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of United Nations trade sanctions. Iran has long claimed it is not seeking nuclear weapons but wants to establish a peaceful atomic energy program.

A deadline for ending the talks was set for today, but officials set a new deadline of March 1, 2015, as the two sides have not come to an agreement. That date is the goal for a deal on a political framework, and a final deadline has been set for July 1, 2015.

Bhala recently published a law review article on Iran trade sanctions and has a chapter on the topic in the newest edition of his international trade law textbook. He also authored the acclaimed treatise “Modern GATT Law,” more than two dozen journal articles and the book “Understanding Islamic Law (Shari’a).” He has lectured around the world and practiced international law at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York before entering academia and currently serves as a foreign legal consultant to Heenan Blaikie LLP, Canada. He has worked in 25 countries, including Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Turkey.
