Doughnut fundraiser to benefit The Shelter Inc.

LAWRENCE — A fundraiser for a Lawrence nonprofit will offer University of Kansas students a chance to buy doughnuts from a beloved local bakery.

The Self Engineering Leadership Fellows Program is sponsoring Donuts for Diplomas to raise money for The Shelter Inc. SELF Fellows will sell baked goods from Munchers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 3 and March 10 with booths at Wescoe Hall, Anschutz Library and the LEEP2. Donuts will be priced at $2 each.

The Shelter Inc. is based in Lawrence. Its mission “is to improve the lives of children and families, with a focus on children at risk in Douglas County and northeast Kansas.”

"We are working to set a scholarship for kids to pursue their education — whether it be college education or professional certification, or SAT or ACT prep,” said Chandler Sloan, a sophomore in mechanical engineering from Mason, Ohio, who is coordinating the event.

SELF Fellows already provide tutoring services to children served by the agency, Sloan said. "It's an organization we work really closely with."

The event replaces the long-running Flapjacks for Philanthropy fundraiser, which SELF students ran for nine years. That event raised more than $15,000 during its lifetime, with beneficiaries including DCCCA, the Willow Domestic Violence Center and Heartland Community Health Center.

Dollars for Donuts aims to raise at least $3,100 this year. In addition to the donut sales, Sloan said, SELF fellows also plan to raise funds with special nights at several Lawrence restaurants in which a share of the evening’s sales will also go to The Shelter Inc. Interested individuals can monitor https://www.facebook.com/DonutsForDiplomas/ for new information on restaurant nights as they’re added.

"The reason we have a philanthropic event is to build on entrepreneurial skills, our personal skills,” Sloan said. “A lot of times as engineering students, it's easy to get caught up in schoolwork. It’s good to be able to see how we can influence others in the community — to invest in their education like someone invested in our education.”
