Denim & Pink Day supports breast cancer awareness

LAWRENCE — In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Week, the Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity will host a Denim and Pink Day on Thursday, Oct. 23.

University of Kansas faculty and staff interested in participating can make a $5 donation to wear jeans and/or pink to show their support. Funds raised from the event will be awarded to the winner of the Breast Cancer Awareness Award, a student essay contest by those who have been affected by breast cancer, personally or in their family.

“With such a diverse campus there is a great chance that many students, faculty and staff have been or will be impacted by breast cancer in their lifetime. With the student essay contest, we give our students the opportunity to share their story of, usually, how a family member’s struggle with cancer impacted them. For our faculty and staff, it offers a time for us to honors survivors as well as those who have lost their battle with cancer. Finally, the week serves as a reminder for us all to either take the proper proactive detection steps or to ask loved ones to do the same,” said Jordan Brandt, graduate assistant at the Emily Taylor center.

Those interested in participating must have their department leader contact Brandt at the center, 785-864-3552.

The Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity was created more than 40 years ago by Dean Emily Taylor to act as a career and resource center for women. Located in 400 Kansas Union, the center aims to provide leadership and advocacy in promoting gender equity and challenge gender-related barriers.
