LAWRENCE — Thirty international fellows with the Hubert H. Humphrey Pre-Academic Program will present their research at a forum from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 20- 22 in the Malott Room at the Kansas Union.

The presentations are the culmination of the eight-week program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State, administered by the Institute of International Education and hosted by KU International Short Programs in partnership with the KU Applied English Center.

The program brings fellows from around the world to KU for the summer to prepare them for professional development experiences at universities throughout the United States.

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program enhances leadership among international professionals who collaborate to address local and global challenges and foster change for the collective good. Through academic study and professional development with U.S. counterparts, this growing global network shares best practices and builds expertise in fields of critical importance to advance societal and institutional capacity, promote human rights and freedoms, ensure sustainable environments and develop thriving communities.

Presentation topics at this year’s forum cover a wide range of research from around the world, such as:

  • Protecting the legal rights of intravenous drug users in accessing HIV/AIDS prevention services in Tanzania;
  • The benefits of agritourism for rural Tibetan women;
  • Cambodia’s national economic development policy support of women-led microbusinesses;
  • Interventions to control animal brucellosis in Punjab, Pakistan;
  • Blockchain technology’s influence on the West African Monetary and Economic Union; and
  • The need for the Korean navy and coast guard to build electric-powered patrol ships.

The public is invited to attend the forum in-person, virtually on Zoom or watch through a YouTube livestream. Those participating on Zoom must register prior to the event. Breaks will occur between each fellow’s presentation, allowing the audience to come and go.

The summer program is the fifth time that KU has hosted the Hubert H. Humphrey Pre-Academic Program. The 2022 fellows are from 21 countries: Algeria, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Burundi, Cambodia, China, Cote d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Panama, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Following the conclusion of the pre-academic program, the fellows will travel to universities across the United States where they will spend the next academic year studying in their area of expertise.
