Cinema con Queso will bring luchador action star to big screen

LAWRENCE — Kansas Public Radio's “The Retro Cocktail Hour” brings an extra-special evening of films back to the big screen Oct. 11 at Liberty Hall.

Cinema con Queso returns with film’s favorite lucha libre star, El Santo, in his first movie, “Cerebro del Mal” (“Brain of Evil.”) In this 1959 film, the Man in the Silver Mask appears in pre-Castro Havana. “Cerebro del Mal” has been lovingly restored and will appear for the first time with English subtitles. Even more luchador action follows as El Santo battles a vengeance-bent vampire countess who is plotting to destroy him in the 1970 film “Santo vs. las Mujeres Vampiro” (“Santo and the Vengeance of the Vampire Women.”)

The doors open at 6 p.m. Friday, and the screenings begin at 7 p.m. General admission tickets are $10 and are available for purchase at the Liberty Hall box office. KPR staff will be selling “Retro Cocktail Hour” T-shirts and the new Kansas Public Radio T-shirts before the show and during intermission. There are a limited amount of shirts available, so don’t miss your chance to get your KPR swag.
