KPR’s 'Retro Cocktail Hour' hosts Cinema a Go Go with a tiki twist

LAWRENCE – Kansas Public Radio’s “Retro Cocktail Hour” is bringing to the big screen a frightfully fun double feature starting at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Liberty Hall. The cheesy classics “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (1954) and “The Beach Girls and the Monster” (1965) both have a lovely tiki-twist.

“Creature from the Black Lagoon” was inspired by an Amazon River legend. The film was a smash hit in its original 3D version and spawned two sequels, “Revenge of the Creature” (1955) and “The Creature Walks Among Us” (1956). “The Beach Girls and the Monster” (aka “Monster from the Surf”) is a strange horror and beach party hybrid.  An aquatic monster is killing teenagers on the beach, or is something else going on?

General admission tickets are $10 and are available for purchase at the Liberty Hall box office, 642 Massachusetts St. Throw on your best tiki-inspired garb, and we will see you at the theatre.

KPR, a 17-time winner of the KAB’s Station of the Year, licensed to the University of Kansas, broadcasts on 91.5 FM and 96.1 FM (KPR2) in Lawrence, 89.7 FM in Emporia, 91.3 FM in Olsburg-Junction City, 89.9 FM in Atchison, 90.3 FM in Chanute, and 99.5 FM and 97.9 FM (KPR2) in Manhattan.
